Art Deco Separated at Birth #9 – Joseph W. Harris House, Berkeley, California

Not exactly separated at birth, but I think a photo dating from when the house was built, alongside how it looks today makes for an interesting comparison.

Joseph W. Harris made his fortune as a clothing retailer, hiring architect John B. Anthony to design a Streamline Moderne residence at a somewhat unusual location; on a hill, at the fork of Le Conte and Hearst Avenues in Berkeley.

These days, the best views of the house are partially obscured but given how busy the intersection is, I can see why the home’s owner might want some privacy.

Thanks to Daniella Thompson of Berkeley Heritage for reminding me about this impressive house. Her excellent article on the house can be found here.
